Now, this isn’t a magic weight loss miracle by any means, but inhaling a few choice essential oils throughout the day can very well help you control your food cravings, so you’re less likely to snack in between meals.

The trick to this aromatherapy method is to inhale your essential oil mixture for a minimum of 5 minutes, because any less than that and you can actually increase your appetite.

I find that adding my essential oils to a small aromatherapy bottle, or one with a roller ball, is the easiest way to transport your oils and inhale them throughout the day. I also love adding my essential oil mixtures to a home oil diffuser so my whole house not only smells lovely, but naturally suppresses my appetite as well!

The best time to use your aromatherapy is before you eat a meal, or whenever you feel a food craving come one. The more you use it throughout the day, the better your results will be.

Some studies have also shown that your weight loss will be more effective if you can change up your essential oils every day, that way your brain doesn’t get used to the aromas. I have three different aromatherapy blends that you can switch up each day, if you choose to.

Here are three aromatherapy recipes you can use for weight loss:

1. Grapefruit Citrus Aromatherapy

Grapefruit Essential Oil

  • 30 drops Grapefruit Oil
  • 5 drops Lemon Oil
  • 1 drop Ylang Ylang Oil

This is one of the most effective appetite suppressing essential oil combinations for weight loss. Grapefruit is extremely powerful as a weight loss agent and the citrus smell is very aromatic and refreshing.

2. Peppermint Blend Aromatherapy

Peppermint Essential Oil

  • 25 drops Peppermint Oil
  • 10 drops Bergamot
  • 5 drops Spearmint
  • 1 drop Ylang Ylang

If you’re not into citrus smells, this fresh and minty combination will work better for you. Peppermint oil is a strong suppressant and can reduce food cravings in between meals.

3. Herbal Aromatherapy Blend

Herbal Essential Oil

  • 20 drops Basil Oil
  • 10 drops Marjoram Oil
  • 1 drop Oregano Oil
  • 1 drop Thyme Oil

For the sensitive types who don’t do well with the stronger citrus and mint aromas, this herbal blend is subtle but potent. Basil is a natural appetite suppressant and has a very pleasant aroma that can also help calm your nerves.

If Using An Aromatherapy Bottle With Reducer

  1. Add a tiny bit of coarse sea salt to the bottom of the bottle, and add your essential oils.
  2. Take three long, slow, and deep inhales of your mixture, really letting the aromas fill your nose. Take a break in between each inhale.
  3. Repeat this three more times.
  4. Use before eating a meal, or whenever you have a food craving.

If Using A Roller Ball Aromatherapy Bottle

  1. Remove the roller ball and fill the bottle with a carrier oil (jojoba or sweet almond oil work best for this).
  2. Add your essential oils and replace roller ball. Shake mixture gently until mixed.
  3. Roll on a small amount of oil to your wrists and inhale aromas. Take three long, slow, deep breaths, and take breaks between inhales.
  4. Repeat three more times.
  5. Use before eating a meal, or whenever you have a food craving.

Additional Tips: I recommend only using glass bottles to store your essential oil blends in, as the oils are known to leach out toxins in plastic bottles. Also, only use dark colored bottles, either amber or cobalt, as this will help the oils keep and store a lot longer.
