Since going natural in my home, I’ve been using vinegar and water for a ton of different cleaning applications, from windows to countertops, and I have to say that it works really well. But there are times when I need a little extra “oomph” when cutting through some grease and grime, so I started experimenting with liquid castile soap and found a great recipe for an all-purpose cleaner.
Before I started my journey into a more natural life, I used to clean my surfaces with conventional cleaners, but after researching into them a bit more, I found out that they are full of toxic chemicals that are extremely harmful to our health. That was enough for me to want a more natural alternative to clean my house with.
When experimenting with different recipes for this all-purpose cleaner, I did notice that some recipes called for the use of Borax as an ingredient, and while I don’t think it would be all that harmful, I personally choose not to use it in my recipes, but you certainly can if you want.
The Best Natural All-Purpose Cleaner Recipe
While you can easily use a plastic spray bottle for this mixture, I highly recommend using a glass spray bottle to not only avoid any BPA, but it also helps keep the essential oils from leaching out any of the toxins that can be found in plastic.
You can actually make a glass spray bottle from an empty Apple Cider Vinegar bottle, like this one from Bragg, and just adding a spray nozzle, or just buy a glass spray bottle off Amazon. Always keep the bottle in a dark cabinet, as the essential oils can spoil in the sunlight.
Note About Essential Oils: While essential oils are definitely optional in this recipe, I will say that the one essential oil I personally recommend is Oregano Oil. Studies have shown that oregano oil can actually inhibit the growth of E coli, and other common bacteria found on surfaces. I also recommend lemon and orange oil to help cut through the dirt and grime, but also leave a really fresh and clean smell.
What You’ll Need
- 1/2 teaspoon Super Washing Soda
- 1 teaspoon Liquid Castile Soap
- 2 cups warm water (use distilled, filtered, or boiled water)
- 20-30 drops of Essential Oils of choice – (I recommend lemon, orange, and oregano oil)
- 16 oz glass spray bottle
What To Do
- Add washing soda, castile soap, and essential oils to your glass bottle.
- Fill the rest of the bottle with warm water. Cover the bottle and shake well until all ingredients are mixed.
- Use as needed. I mostly use this for countertops, sinks, bathrooms, tub/shower, and other surfaces.
Don’t Want To Make Your Own?
I’ve tried looking for a true all natural cleaner for a while now, but most of the popular ‘natural’ brands still use sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates as a main ingredient. Since this is one of the ingredients I really want to avoid (and you can read here about why), I found it increasingly difficult to find a truly natural cleaner, until Branch Basics.
Branch Basics is a truly all-natural soap company, and they make only a few different products that have all natural, safe ingredients. One of their main products is their all-purpose soap concentrate, which can be diluted and used for a ton of different applications. I always have a bottle on hand whenever I’m running low of my homemade cleaner, and it really does clean like a champ!
