Conventional deodorant was one of the first things I tossed in the trash when transitioning to a more natural, chemical free life, but I needed a natural replacement that would still keep me smelling fresh. I had tried some of the ‘natural’ deodorants on the market, but to my surprise, many of them still had aluminum and other chemicals commonly found in conventional products.

So I started making my own homemade natural deodorant, and absolutely loved how easy is was to make, and that I could customize the scents to whatever I liked. The only problem was that, I reacted to the baking soda ingredient and it gave me a rash, which is what I hear from other people who are sensitive to baking soda as well.

I ended up just swapping out the baking soda for arrowroot (which I do mention in my natural deodorant recipe), and I haven’t had any problems since. It’s an easy swap for those of you who may be sensitive to the baking soda, but I thought maybe I could come up with a recipe that took an entirely different approach, like a spray-on deodorant without baking soda.

After doing some research, I found that a good base for a spray on deodorant is magnesium oil. Don’t be put off by the ‘oil’ part because even though magnesium oil feels like oil, it doesn’t actually have any oil in it. Could this really be the answer to a great natural deodorant without baking soda?

I decided to give it a try!

I have to say that not only does this deodorant spray really work at keeping body odor at bay, but it doesn’t stain clothes, and it also gives you a good dose of magnesium, which many of us are very deficient in. It dries fairly quickly, so you can spray it on and get dressed soon after without waiting, and just adding in some of your favorite essential oils makes it smell wonderful. You can even put it in a small spray bottle and toss it in your bag whenever you need to freshen up.

Note: Some recipes I have seen state that you can make your own magnesium oil at home, but I don’t recommend this method as the result won’t be as pure as buying the oil pre-made. There is a whole chemical process that needs to happen to ensure a pure magnesium product, and it’s just not something you can do at home. You can read more about the differences here.

All Natural Spray Deodorant Recipe

This recipe really couldn’t be any easier!

  1. Pour the magnesium oil into your spray bottle.
  2. Add your essential oils, if using them.
  3. Shake bottle before each use, and spray a small amount on each underarm, rubbing it in gently and allowing it to dry.
  4. Use as needed.

Note: You may experience a slight tingling sensation when first applying this, which is completely normal. It usually happens if you just recently shaved your underarms, or have a magnesium deficiency. It should subside within a few days.
