I love skin care, and one of my favorite things to do is use a deep cleansing mask to get rid of any impurities that may have accumulated on my skin, but also it’s just so darn relaxing. Usually I use a mud mask about once a week in the evenings, as I use the oil cleansing method in the morning.

The main ingredient in these masks is Bentonite Clay, which I’ve written about the many different healing benefits it has. Bentonite clay is amazing as a detox for your skin to pull out any toxins or impurities, which makes it great for an acne treatment. You can easily use bentonite clay one its own with just a touch of water, but I have two additional recipes to get a really deep cleansing mask.

Things You’ll Need

  • Bentonite Clay – I love this one from Aztec Indian Healing Clay on Amazon because it’s soft and silky.
  • Raw Honey – Not only is it delicious and really good for you, raw honey has a ton of antibacterial and antioxidant properties that are wonderful for cleansing and treating the skin. This raw honey from Y.S. Eco Bee Farms is one I purchase constantly and have had great results with, both as a food and skin treatment.
  • Activated Charcoal – This is different from the stuff you put in your barbecue, or the ashes from a fire (please don’t use either of those!). Activated charcoal can reduce poisonous substances by up to 60%, and has been used to treat people who have consumed toxic chemicals. It also makes an amazing detox mask for your skin, as it binds to impurities and draws them out. I like this one from Coal-Conut as it’s made from coconut shells and has a really fine texture to it.
  • Essential Oils and/or Dried Herbs – These are optional, but make for a very luxurious mask treatment. I get my oils and herbs from Majestic Pure on Amazon due to their organic high quality ingredients.
  • Water and/or Apple Cider Vinegar: You can use water alone, but combining it with Apple Cider Vinegar makes for a wonderful anti-aging and detox treatment. I’ve written about the benefits of apple cider vinegar before, which is a wonderful ingredient for the skin. Just make sure to make a 50:50 ratio of water and ACV, otherwise the ACV may be too strong for sensitive skin.

1. Simple Mud Mask Recipe

This one is super simple to do and it’s only two ingredients! This will activate the power of the bentonite clay on its own, and is wonderful as a full face mask, or even a spot treatment for blemishes.

Simple Mud Mask Ingredients

  • 1-2 teaspoons of Bentonite Clay
  • 1-2 teaspoons of water and/or apple cider vinegar

Simple Mud Mask Instructions

  1. Mix the bentonite clay and water/ACV in a small non-metallic bowl until it turns into a nice paste, not too thick and not too thin.
  2. Immediately apply to your face using gentle circular motions, massaging it into the skin and avoiding the eyes.
  3. Leave on for 15-20 minutes. You should feel it start to dry and feel tighter.
  4. Rinse off with warm water, or wet a washcloth with hot water and press onto your skin to let the steam open up your pores (this is my favorite method).
  5. Use once a week, or as needed.

2. Luxurious Deep Cleansing Mud Mask Recipe

This one is one of my favorite recipes because it’s got a really luxurious feel to it with the addition of honey and essential oils.

Luxurious Deep Cleansing Mud Mask Ingredients

  • 1-2 teaspoons of Bentonite Clay
  • 1 teaspoon raw honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon of powdered chamomile or lavender (optional)
  • 2 drops of essential oil of choice (I like lavender and rosemary in mine)
  • 1-2 teaspoons of water

Luxurious Deep Cleansing Mud Mask Instructions

  1. Powder your flowers in a coffee grinder, or food processor if using them in this recipe.
  2. Mix bentonite clay with the powdered flowers in a small non-metallic bowl.
  3. Add the raw honey and mix until it forms a thick paste.
  4. Add in some water until the paste becomes a bit thinner, but not runny.
  5. Apply immediately to the face and neck, working in circular motions, but avoiding the eyes.
  6. Leave on for 15-20 mins, or until the mask starts to dry and harden.
  7. Rinse off with warm water, or use a wet washcloth with hot water and apply to skin to steam off the mask.
  8. Your skin should be super supple and soft!

3. Ultra Detox Deep Cleansing Mud Mask Recipe

I use this one if I’ve been outside anywhere where there’s a lot of smoke and pollution, or if I just want a really deep cleansed face. This one works great for anyone with skin conditions like acne or psoriasis.

  1. Mix bentonite clay with the activated charcoal in a small, non-metallic bowl.
  2. Add the raw honey and mix until it forms a thick paste.
  3. Add in some water until the paste becomes a bit thinner, but not runny.
  4. Apply immediately to the face and neck, working in circular motions, but avoiding the eyes.
  5. Leave on for 15-20 mins, or until the mask starts to dry and harden.
  6. Rinse off with warm water, or use a wet washcloth with hot water and apply to skin to steam off the mask.
  7. Your skin should be really deep cleansed and very soft!

Tips: This recipe is very messy because of the active charcoal, so make sure to use dark-colored washcloths, and wear something that you don’t care too much about getting dirty. It won’t stain your stuff, as long as you rinse it off, but if it gets into more porous materials like grout, you’re gonna have a bad time. Just be careful and you should be fine!

Have you made your own mud masks at home? What are your favorite ingredients to use?
