Maintaining a healthy weight has been one of the biggest obstacles of the modern Western diet, and for a lot of people, it can be increasingly difficult to lose weight. With tons of processed and fast foods right at our fingertips, finding healthy options can pose a challenge for some.

When I started my journey to finding natural and healthy ways to heal my body, one of my goals was to shed some unwanted pounds I had been holding onto for years. I realized that my typical diet of starchy, processed food, just wasn’t cutting it for me, so I decided to do some research into the healing abilities of food.

While eating whole organic fruits, vegetables, and meats are sure to get you started on the right track, there are a few foods out there that have an amazing ability to help you lose weight fast. I found nine wonderful, and super simple foods, that will help you shed those unwanted pounds in a hurry, but safely!

Here are just some of the foods I found work wonders for quick, natural weight loss.

1. Almonds

Almonds are a powerhouse when it comes to weight loss and nutrition, and a tiny handful of them is all it takes to do the trick. Just one ounce of almonds, which is about 23 kernels, packs a whopping 6g of protein! That’s more than some of those so-called “protein bars” on the market that are usually just filled with all kinds of unnecessary ingredients. The combination of protein, fat, and fiber will keep you feeling full and satiated between meals, keeping you from consuming too many calories throughout the day.

Studies have shown that participants who ate a 1/4 cup of almonds as a snack experienced a 62% reduction in their overall weight within 24 weeks. Almonds are also packed full of L-arginine, which has been known to help burn more carbs and fat during a regular workout. Just make sure to sprout your almonds before consuming in order to maximize their nutrients, and reduce any anti-nutrients they contain.

2. Green Tea

Green tea is amazing for a lot of reasons, but if you’re looking to lose weight, drinking 4-5 cups a day will not only give you a boost of energy, but studies have shown that it can help you lose more belly fat when exercising. The secret is the catechins, a powerful antioxidant that prevents the storage of belly fat, making it easier to burn off during a workout resulting in quicker weight loss overall.

3. Coconut Oil

I love coconut oil for its many different health benefits, and one of those is helping to shed pounds quicker. Coconut oil is full of MCTs, or Medium Chain Triglycerides, which are fatty acids that metabolize differently in the body, leading to a more efficient metabolism. It’s also nutrient dense and thermogenic, which means that just by eating it, you expend more calories than you would with other high fat foods. Because of its high content of MCTs, coconut oil will keep you from feeling hungry for hours at a time, which results in fewer calories eaten overall. I love to add a tablespoon into my coffee in the morning, which keeps me feeling full for hours!

4. Lemons

Lemons can be used for all types of things from skin care, household cleaning, and a dose of vitamin C, but what they’re also great for is weight loss. Since lemons are naturally detoxifying, they help the body alkalize making you healthier, more energetic, and refreshed. Lemon water has amazing health benefits on its own, and drinking it first thing in the morning will help your body detoxify and boost your immune system. You can also squeeze some fresh lemon juice onto a salad, fresh fish, or make a dressing with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

5. Cinnamon

Cinnamon isn’t just for adding a wonderful warm taste to baked goods, but it also has the unique ability to actually reduce your blood sugar levels, which is wonderful for diabetics. A study has shown that adding a bit of cinnamon to a meal can reduce the glycemic load by 18-29%, and that can help prevent spikes in blood sugar when eating carbohydrate heavy meals. It also has the ability to speed up your metabolism, and lower LDL, the bad cholesterol. Add a teaspoon to your daily cup of green tea for a double boost of weight loss benefits.

6. Broth

Broth, especially any type of organic bone broth, has fantastic healing properties just on its own, but it also has the ability to boost your metabolism and keep you fuller, longer. Studies have shown that having a bowl of broth soup before a regular meal can actually reduce the amount of calories consumed during that meal. Not only does it taste great, and is easy to make, but it’s gentle on your digestive tract and helps keep you hydrated.

7. Apple Cider Vinegar

I love apple cider vinegar for its myriad of health benefits. Not only do I use it on my hair as a conditioning rinse, but taking a quick shot of it in the morning helps give my body the boost of energy it needs to get through the day. It’s wonderful for detoxing the body, and is full of nutrients, minerals, and vitamins that help your body heal.

It’s also said that apple cider vinegar can also help regulate blood sugar and insulin levels, which can be beneficial for diabetics. I use mine in smoothies, or mixed with a glass of water with lemon in the morning. While it doesn’t taste all that great, the benefits definitely outweigh the rather strong taste. Just make sure to get raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar like this one from Bragg.

8. Pistachios

Who knew a delicious food could also be really good for you? A study done at the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition showed that when two groups of participants were separated and given the same amount of calories a day for 12 weeks – with one group eating pretzels for snacks while the other group had pistachios – the pistachio group lost a full BMI point compared to the pretzel group who stayed the same. The pistachio group also showed improved cholesterol and triglyceride levels compared to the pretzel group.

9. Avocado Oil

I absolutely love avocados, and I try to eat them whenever they’re on sale at my local market, but I didn’t realize the weight loss power of the actual oil itself. Penn State University researchers did a study by comparing people who consumed avocado oil over those who consumed a flax-safflower blend, and remarkably the avocado oil eaters lost nearly 2 percent of their total belly fat in only a month. That’s roughly 20% belly fat loss in one year, and it only takes 3 tablespoons of avocado oil a day! It’s also a great oil to cook with as it has almost no taste, and an incredibly high smoke point, perfect for frying veggies in. I absolutely love this brand of avocado oil and use it every day for cooking.

10. Grapefruit

You may have heard of the “grapefruit diet” in the past, but there may be some truth to the weight loss claims that the diet makes. A study done found that eating half a grapefruit before a meal can dramatically enhance your body’s fat burning ability, and can even reduce your waist-line up to in inch in only six weeks! Be careful before you start buying up your share of grapefruit from the market because it can interfere with certain types of medications, so check with your doctor before trying this neat weight loss trick.
